A QUICK “PICK ME UP” FOR RELATIONSHIPS
Have you and your loved one been feeling disconnected recently?
Have you had trouble feeling positive about your relationship and need a “pick me up”?
If your relationship has a solid foundation of love and is going through a rocky time there are little things you can do to feel better about each other and your relationship. If your relationship has been “off” for a long time and there is a lot of resentment, hurt, betrayal or anger toward one another, the following exercise can help but you may need more help than it can offer you.
Have you ever heard of oxytocin? It is a naturally occurring neurochemical in our brain that acts like a hormone because it flows through our blood as well. Examples of when oxytocin is released are during breastfeeding and orgasm. Both of these can generate a blissful, very contented, loving feeling where everything feels ok with the world. And our relationship!
But even better news is that any warm, loving, touch can release oxytocin. This means hugging, snuggling, holding hands, close dancing, and massage. Even more exciting, neuroscience has confirmed that because of how our brains work (our brain doesn’t know the difference between thinking about an action and doing it) even thinking about someone who loves us and we deeply love will release oxytocin in our brains.
So start touching your partner in loving ways and thinking about the loving times you’ve had together and you’ll start to feel more positive and loving toward her/him. And when we feel positive and loving toward our partner, guess what happens? Problems are easier to resolve and problems that seemed like problems no longer are. Give it a try!
